I have downloaded and installed 2 desktop/standalone version of Mendeley and Zotero. Registration and installation is relatively simple. Zotero can use the openID.
Chrome Extension (3 stars -379 reviews, 426,702 users)
For Mendeley: The ratings for the past 3 weeks are very poor. 1 to 3 stars. A lot of complaints from the user. Most of them 1-2 stars.
But I'll try anyway.
Installation is easy but when I wanted to sign in, a page pops up and disappeared.
So I am unable to use it.
For Zotero (4 stars - 1450 reviews, 963,540 users)
No problem installing. For signing in I need to have the standalone program. Only then it will be able to synchronise with my account.
